Nanotechnology

By Khalifa Alzaabi

Ever heard of a nanometer or nanotechnology. Did you ever think about why chemical engineers called it nanotechnology? In this post I will briefly explain about nanotechnology and what is behind naming it like that.

NanoTech

Nanotechnology are the study and application of extremely small things and can be used across all the other science fields, such as chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and engineering. It’s hard to imagine just how small nanotechnology is. One nanometer is a 10-9 of a meter. There is some other comparison that were done in order to know just how small a nanometer is:

             - There are 25,400,000 nanometers in an inch

             - A sheet of newspaper is about 100,000 nanometers thick

             - On a comparative scale, if a marble were a nanometer, then one meter would be the size of the Earth.

These nanometer molecules are impossible to see with a naked eye, moreover, they are impossible to see even with microscopes used in high school science classes. The microscopes that can see these molecules were invented about 30 years ago.
