Chemical Engineers are NOT Chemists!

By Khalifa ALHammadi

Most people think that chemical engineers and chemists study the same courses and have similar career. Both have things in common but the differences are more! Actually, the public understands what chemists do because most people studied chemistry in school but they lack what chemical
engineers do. The study of Chemistry is much older than Chemical engineering. "The study of chemistry as a science began in the 1600s, with chemists like Robert Boyle working towards the formulation of Boyle's Law. Chemical engineering emerged in its

own right the late 1800s with George E Davis coining the term ‘Chemical engineering’."(Maitland). In addition, there are more chemists than chemical engineers but, fortunately, the number of students majoring chemical engineering is increasing year by year. Chemists mainly focus on analyzing and testing substance and measuring properties of materials. On the other hand, Chemical engineers focus on turning the substances tested by chemists into useful materials. Chemists try to develop new compounds and Chemical engineers work with existing materials. As known, chemists work in laboratories and sometimes in offices, while, chemical engineers tend to work in fields.
